IFWLA Awards

Amy McCleary

IF Recognition Award

Presented at the conclusion of the 2006 Prague Cup in the Czech Republic in July by Sabine Paul, Germany’s Goalkeeper in World Cups 2001 & 2005, and a highly respected player on the German Team.  Sabine was the IFWLA representative in the absence of an IFWLA Officer.

Amy McCleary was nominated by Germany for an IFWLA Recognition Award in 2006.  Amy supported German Lacrosse from the early start in 1995, and along with other support staff led the German Team to their first World Cup participation in 2001.  Amy had been Manager to the National Team, and Assistant Coach to Denise Wescott, until she took over as Head Coach in 2006.

Germany participated in the IFWLA 2005 World Cup in Annapolis, where Germany won their first match in their World Cup history.

Since the beginning Amy supported Germany by travelling from her native homeland of the USA to Europe, where she conducted clinics and camps at least twice a year.  Her knowledge contributed greatly to the skills development of new players from the emerging Lacrosse countries.  The many miles that Amy covered during the 10-year period also saw ‘tons’ of equipment transported from the USA to Germany.

Germany was accepted into Associate Membership to the IFWLA in 1997 in Stockholm, Sweden, and into Full Membership in 1999 in England. In the administrative area Amy represented Germany at IFWLA Conferences in 2000 (Scotland), 2001 (England), 2002 (Canada), 2003 (USA), 2004 (Czech Republic) and 2005 (USA), where she was always a key contributor to Germany’s development by acting in an advocacy role in support of their countries, and indeed all developing countries - she was the ‘voice’ for Germany.

Without Amy, German Lacrosse would not be where it is today; She was one of the reasons why it developed so quickly, and Germany is grateful for not only the amount of work initiated by Amy, but also the quality of that work.  She always coached with enthusiasm, and woke up and spread the spirit of the game in all of her players.

The German Lacrosse Association is delighted to now have this opportunity to  recognize Amy for her immense voluntary efforts through nominating her for the prestigious International Recognition Award.
